A*Star, Applied Materials launch lab to develop
semiconductor equipment and local supply chain
- A*Star and Applied Materials have launched a joint lab in Singapore, called Apex
- The lab aims to improve semiconductor manufacturing by reducing waste and increasing efficiency
- It will develop components for industries like IoT, automotive, and communications
- A*Star’s research institutes will contribute to designing innovative manufacturing processes
- The lab supports Singapore’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain
A*Star (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) and Applied Materials have jointly launched a lab called Apex, aimed at enhancing Singapore’s chip ecosystem. The lab will focus on developing semiconductor manufacturing processes that reduce material waste and increase resource efficiency. It will also improve equipment used in industries such as IoT, automotive, and power, by creating new processes and computer models for testing and optimization.
A*Star’s research institutes will contribute their expertise to develop innovative components and manufacturing techniques. This initiative will support Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), helping them to advance in semiconductor component production and compete globally.
Applied Materials sees the collaboration as part of its “Singapore 2030” strategy to expand its manufacturing and R&D capabilities and strengthen workforce development in Singapore. The initiative was launched at the Manufacturing Innovation & Technology Conference 2024, where government representatives emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in growing Singapore’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem.
The lab will boost the local supply chain and cement Singapore’s role as a key player in the global semiconductor industry, where a significant portion of equipment is assembled.
