Equinix, a major data centre operator, is building its sixth facility in Singapore with an investment of US$260 million. The new nine-storey data centre, SG6, is set to open in the first quarter of 2027 and will provide 20 megawatts (MW) of capacity when fully operational. This project is part of a government initiative to support sustainable data centre growth, with 80 MW awarded to four operators, including Equinix, Microsoft, and others, to meet holistic sustainability goals.
SG6 will be connected to Equinix’s global network of data centres, enabling efficient, low-latency connections across different regions. Singapore’s digital economy, which contributes nearly 18% to its GDP, relies heavily on data centres for innovation, especially in AI, blockchain, and quantum technology. However, there is a push to balance growth with climate goals, as data centres consume large amounts of energy for cooling.
In response, Singapore plans to increase its data centre capacity by 300 MW, with a focus on sustainable solutions like green energy and liquid-cooling systems. SG6 will feature liquid-cooling technology, which is more energy-efficient than traditional air cooling and can handle high-demand workloads like AI. The project aligns with the government’s Green Data Centre Roadmap, promoting energy-efficient and environmentally responsible data centre growth in the country.
