Pfizer, the US pharmaceutical company, opened a new $1 billion plant in Singapore on July 23. Located in Tuas Biomedical Park, the 429,000 sq ft facility will produce active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Pfizer’s cancer, pain, and antibiotic medicines. The plant is expected to create 250 highly skilled jobs. This new facility is an extension of Pfizer’s existing site, which has been operating for 20 years. It has passed all final checks and is now manufacturing products. The facility has earned a Green Mark Gold certification for its environmental sustainability efforts and contributes to Pfizer’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
The plant is one of the most automated in Pfizer’s global network, which includes over 30 manufacturing sites worldwide. The expansion is a key part of Pfizer’s strategy to increase its manufacturing capacity and create life-changing medicines. Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Gan Kim Yong, praised Pfizer’s investment as part of Singapore’s goal to become a leader in advanced manufacturing. The biomedical sciences sector is a significant part of Singapore’s economy, contributing 2.3% to the country’s GDP.
Pfizer has been in Singapore since 1964 and has expanded its operations over the years. The company also collaborates with local research institutions to develop new manufacturing technologies. Pfizer’s strong partnership with the Singapore government, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, was also highlighted at the plant’s opening.
